Puerto Los Cabos with Christine

Puerto Los Cabos, located on the Sea of Cortez and only a five minute drive from San Jose del Cabo and 40 minute drive from Los Cabos is one of the newest up-and-coming vacation destinations for those seeking a more relaxed setting. A master-planned resort destination, Puerto Los Cabos is a mixture of gated residential communities, golf courses and a world class marina offering deep sea fishing excursions for those wanting to experience the thrill of catching ‘the big one.’

Puerto Los Cabos offers several five star resorts located along the beach, names which include The Ritz Carlton, The JW Marriott and Secrets Puerto Los Cabos, an adult resort that caters to everyone (but children!).

Secrets Puerto Los Cabos is an all-inclusive property where every room offers ocean views. Well suited to host weddings, honeymoons, holiday getaways or corporate events, it is a diverse full service resort with a full service spa and is situated right next door to Puerto Los Cabos Golf Course. Various rooms also feature a private outdoor jacuzzi or swim-out pool.

Offering guests five a la carte restaurants, buffet, four bars, a poolside snack bar and full service pool side restaurant, and with a 24 hour coffee shop and 24 hour room service, your culinary options are limitless.

Activities are a large focus of the resort, with a dedicated team of entertainment staff that are professionals in encouraging guests to take part in various activities including water volleyball, ping pong and putting tournaments, shooting, archery, batting cage, tequila tastings and cooking classes. It’s not hard to find something that’ll get you involved and have you meeting new friends.

The Los Cabos area is known as Mexico’s golfing destination, offering over 100 golf courses, and Puerto Los Cabos Golf Course is ranked up there with the best. A Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman designed, par 73 course, it overlooks the Sea of Cortez and skirts the Secrets Resort. A five minute taxi ride from Secrets brings you to the newly completed clubhouse, your starting point to a visually memorable golfing experience. With breathtaking views and offering 18 challenging holes, it’s a golfer’s paradise.

Food and beverage service, including alcoholic beverages are included in the rates and are located approximately every four holes allowing you to refuel for the next challenge ahead of you. If you’re an avid golfer, the memories are well worth taking the time to experience the beauty and challenge this course offers.

From the resort, the Town of San Jose del Cabo is the closest shopping area where you can find everything from local Mexican handicrafts, clothing stores, art galleries and street vendors. Bars and restaurants line the streets of this traditional town with outdoor bands and traditional Mexican dancing performances entertaining visitors.

The area is currently undergoing street upgrades however that did not take away any of the cosy and quaint village atmosphere and, when completed, will only offer to its village ambiance with a large plaza lined with outdoor seating and bars and cafes.

Puerto Los Cabos, with its Marina, is also a great starting point for deep sea fishing excursions. Professional or local charter options are available and can be tailored to your wants and needs. Tuna, Marlin, Snapper Sailfish and Mahi Mahi are only a few of the hundreds of types of fish swimming in these waters. Many hotels offer their guests to bring back their catch and for a charge, will prepare your fish how you like.

We caught a few fish during our trip but kept only a Yellow Fin Tuna. Upon our arrival back to the resort, we spoke to the concierge who arranged for the chef to prepare it.

For a USD 18.00 charge p.p. we enjoyed a fresh, fully plated meal with rice and grilled vegetables and lightly seared tuna caught only hours earlier.

When I was considering a destination to visit, my criteria included quiet, golf, beach, spa, all- inclusive, minimal travel time and five star quality. Secrets Puerto Los Cabos meets all of those criteria, however the beach is not located on swimable water. The tides are strong and while they are beautiful, are to be admired from afar from palapas located a safe distance away or from the Barracuda Bar where you can sit on swings and spend hours watching the waves crash against the shore.

I can’t say enough about my visit to Puerto Los Cabos or my stay at The Secrets Resort. The Resort staff are amazing, the service impeccable, the options limitless, and the experience, one of my most memorable. Only a four hour direct flight from Vancouver, it’s a great destination to consider.
